Alan Rushbridger: The history & Digital Strategy of "The Guardian".

The guardian came about through somebody in the crowd, who realised the terrible thing the state has done to kill a lot of an-armed peaceful protesters and somebody needs to write what had happened. After the times reporter had been jailed, John Edward Taylor had wrote down what happened sent it to London and was printed in the Times. This left a version of facts, people came up with ways to prove that this source was true by crowd sourcing, saying that a large amount of people saying this is true rather than just the magistrate was saying this.

The Guardian was put into a trust which means it was never introduced for just profit.

It has cleverly built up a billion dollar endowlment, which is there to subsidise the journalism.
Long-term about the problem, because it doesn't have a pirportery its only relationship is with its readers. They set out to embrace being digital, because most of their readers turned out to be global 2/3 of their readers turned out to be worldwide and aren't British which they thought seemed to be an opportunity.

They had an idea to concentrate on the mission and not on the money, as they thought they had to understand why they were there otherwise why would the readers ever support them.

They had a life changing day with Clay Shirky where they spoke with the readers, to say "look you are going to have to pay us in some form or another", asking how they would like that to work. There were to models:
1. The readers would pay them, they would put a wall around the content.
