"Independent Woman" - by Destiny's Child
-Song duration - 3:56

Destiny's Child Context

-Destiny's child preached a powerful litany of embracing womanhood and celebrating individuality.
-Destiny's Child was an American girl group whose final and best-known line-up comprised BeyoncĂ© KnowlesKelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. The group began their musical career as Girl's Tyme, formed in 1990 in Houston, Texas. After years of limited success, the quartet comprising Knowles, Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett were signed in 1997 to Columbia Records as Destiny's Child.
-This girl group was highly influential to millions of young women just like them and still idolise these individuals to this day.
-The definition of an "Independent Woman" in the urban dictionary, is written as "A woman who pays her own bills, buys her own things, and does not allow a man to affect her stability or self-confidence. She supports herself on her own entirely and is proud to be able to do so". This is widely shown throughout the video through the lyrics.
-While feminism has become a spiderweb of threads over the past ten years, turn-of-the-millennium R&B was all about third-wave feminist ideals centred around uber-capitalist power and not relyin' on no man (see also: TLC's "No Scrubs"). Nowhere is this idea more prominent than in Destiny's Child's "Independent Women", where the sweepingly infectious chorus goes: "All the women who are independent, throw your hands up at me / all the honeys who makin' money, throw your hands up at me."
-Putting aside for a second the fact that this arguably propagates heteronormative stereotypes – and also that it acted as the lead soundtrack to Charlie's Angels (a film based on three women who work for one, unseen male millionaire) – the track still holds up as a mantra of female strength, vocal assertiveness and closing the gender wage gap.
-Beyonce came up with the song after having an argument with her boyfriend. She thought to herself, "I don't need a man, I'm independent", and with that went into a studio on her own and recorded vocals for the first version of the song, which promoted female independence, both financially and relationally.

What have I chosen this track?

- I strongly believe in female empowernemmt and the opportunity for everyone to be equal. I have always loved Destiny's child and Beyonce and look up to them as role models for years. Their music is highly influential and sends a message to anyone who listens. We still struggle with this issue of male dominance so speeding the message is extremely important. I feel that is protest song will allow me to show how women are labelled as weak in some respect and this song shows how women have be allowed to gain independence from men.

  1. Lots of detail here, well done. The word is 'perpetuates' regarding the heteronormative stereotypes, not propagates! Miss Cook :)
