COVID-19 explanation for the music video

Explanation for Independent Women. Pt, 1 (Covid-19 Updated)

Originally, for my music video I wanted to portray a young women who has just gone through a toxic breakup in which was holding her down from achieving her dreams. The video will of shown aspects of gender inequality within the workplace and life in general, and how feminism can sometimes be seen in lacking in intersectionality. But due to Covid-19 I was unable to film with anyone and show these different representations of race, sex, class ect. This idea of intersectionality of heavily important in society, as it enables us to examine the various ways people can be oppressed based on individual identities which leads to unique forms of cruel exercise of authority in this case the power of male authority. I feel that topic is still very important to share as there is still an ongoing gender wage gap, so is important to share to my demographic of sophisticated, culturally and socially aware 16 to 25-year-olds within the ABC1 one demographic who who are from a working class, low income backgrounds that they will aspire to be successful without relying on the dominance of a male figure which is the original message of the video but also spreading the message among the male audience so they have an idea of the looking gender inequality. I decided to base my protest video around the power of female independence, as my mother has always financially looked after me and my brother, so I aspire to be like her but also understand the struggles of issues she has faced in the work-place regarding inequalities. By sharing this message, I hope to spread awareness so maybe one day we reach equality to the next generation who can make a difference.

Intertextual References in the Music Video.

Sunflower Field

Due to COVID-19 I was unable to visit and incorporate sunflowers in my music video. This bold colour will completely contrast with the neutral tones of the video. In, 1867 Kansas suffragists adopted the sunflower, the state flower as a symbol of their campaign, the flower has a direct connection between the women's access to vote and the creation of temperance laws from then onwards, the colour yellow/gold has been associated with the "colour of light and life" as it is seen to touch that guides our purpose and purity labels I believe lead to not only success but to shape a kind and loving person.

Women's Rights Symbol

I also want to incorporate the symbol of the Women's Rights symbol, this not only spreads awareness to my demographic of how important this topic is in us gaining freedom from complete independence. This will be a memorable moment for the audience. This is incorporated into the music through a projection of it onto the artists face, filmed as a close-up shot, implying that she identifies herself as someone who is fighting for freedom and that she has had no male help that has gained her any financial success.

Women's Rights Marches

Throughout the video I have incoperated videos of women's right's marches, this reminds the viewer of this ongoing problem and women for centuries have protested for equality, nowadays female independence present but not to its full extent.

Sarah Everard Memorial Video

Towards the end of the video, there is a short clip from Sarah Everard's memorial. This death opened eyes to the dangers that women face everyday. This was used out of respect for her life as it happened fairy recently whilst this video was in the making, the reason her life was taken away from her for no other reason than she was a female showing the equality that is still present in our daily lives.
