Irreplaceable by Beyonce

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EwViQxSJJQ

Context

-The song is about her husband. He has been cheating on her and she has finally decided to kick him out. He is telling her that she will never be able to replace him, but she is telling him that she already has.
-This particular music video displays specific generic conventions of a typical R&B/Pop music video as it includes a variety of things such as a narrative, themed locations and a specific type of costume which I think I'm going to adopt to add to my music video.
-The target audience for this video would be the younger generation as they would have grown up with and are particularly familiar with Beyonce.

Mise-en-scene

-Beyoncé wears a tight fitting crop top with some hipster jeans whilst her ex-boyfriend wears a cream jacket (probably designer) over a white vest top along with a chain and diamanté earrings. Which is the typical dress code of women and men in R&B videos.
-Also, the choice of the location, a large expensive mansion and the ethnicity of the two main people (Beyoncé and her ex), who are both of an African American background, are typical conventions of this genre.
-Halfway through the music video Beyonce is sat on a brand new looking shiny sports car watching her ex drive off in older car, suggesting he's not needed in her life and that she can become successful without his help driving female empowerment.
-She looks very glamorous and sensual towards the end of the music video at 2.31 where she is wearing a full face of makeup and lingerie, portraying a strong female figure embracing her body and maybe suggesting that nobody is in control of it.

Cinematography, Editing and Sound

-There are lots of shots throughout the video of Beyoncé which are often demanded by the record label as a way of helping to promote her as an artist. In part of the video Beyoncé is shown dancing in silhouette in front of a glass door. According to Laura Mulvey’s theory this could be seen as voyeuristic treatment as it shows off the female body and would appeal to a heterosexual male audience. This can also be viewed as an intertextual reference as it is actually inspired by a James Bond movie.
-Towards the beginning of th
-The next part of the video we see is Beyoncé sitting in front of a mirror putting on lipstick, wearing hair curlers, a tight skirt and bra-like top. Close up shots are used here of her face and some could argue that she is subject to male gaze (Laura Mulvey) as what she is wearing is quite revealing. This could have been constructed purposefully to encourage more males to watch her music videos as her main followers tend to be women. Alternatively this part of the music video could be to emphasize that she is secure in herself and to promote that women should be as confident and
independent as she just has been; getting rid of a man who didn’t treat her the way he should’ve “So since I’m not you’re everything how about I mean nothing, nothing at all to you”.
